Netrake and Kineto Wireless Announce Product Interoperability for Support of UMA Wireless LAN Solutions

Netrake and Kineto Wireless announced the companies have successfully completed extensive interoperability testing to support currently installed UMA systems. Netrake's nCite Security Gateway and Kineto's IP-based UMA Network Controller (IP-UNC) are currently deployed in multiple commercial trials for UMA-based mobile/Wi-Fi convergence. This joint solution allows mobile operators to leverage their existing infrastructure and utilize UMA-based technology to cost effectively manage and accelerate fixed-to-mobile usage in home and enterprise environments.

London gets free WiMax service News - PC Advisor

To no great surprise, "free service" means another WiMax trial, but one that may be more advanced than others – including Libera in London, Telabria in Kent, Pipex in Stratford and Brighton's Metranet. The difference, according to Urban WiMax, is that it is promising a smooth change from a free service starting in April to a paid-for service in July, and is based on 802.16d standard kit, not pre-WiMax.

NTT DoCoMo applies for WiMAX test licence

NTT DoCoMo applied to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for a license to set up experimental outdoor wireless stations to test WiMAX. DoCoMo, working in collaboration with other NTT group companies, will conduct the test in the Yoyogi area of Tokyo for about one year using the 2.5GHz frequency band. The test will assess throughput and wireless transmission characteristics according to the distances between a handset and base station, and handset moving speed, verify the optimal wireless parameters and base station allocations to obtain maximum results, assess the possibility of interference from existing satellite communication systems, such as WideStar, and confirm continuous connections during handover within the WiMAX system or between WiMAX and other systems, such as HSDPA.

WiMAX Forum Certifies Additional Profile for Fixed WiMAX

The WiMAX Forum announced the latest fixed wireless broadband network products to achieve the designation of WiMAX Forum Certified based on the defined Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) system profile operating in the 3.5GHz frequency spectrum. The WiMAX Forum member companies and products to complete certification and interoperability testing include Airspan's MacroMAX base station and EasyST subscriber station solution, Axxcelera's ExcelMax base station, Sequans Communications' SQN1010-RD subscriber station solution, Siemens' WayMAX@vantage base station and subscriber station solutions, and Wavesat's miniMAX subscriber station solution.

Urban WiMax claims it will be significantly cheaper than fixed-line symmetric broadband services. It will target firms that need a reliable broadband connection, but can't afford the expense of a dedicated fibre link.

print Nextel says it hopes to be covering “no less than 15 million Americans” with its planned 2.5GHz broadband wireless network by mid-2009. The carrier has still to decide on which technology the network will be based, with systems such as WiBro, and Flash-OFDM, or proprietary equipment from IPWireless and Motorola all in the frame. Light Reading reports that Sprint Nextel is looking for a technology which will provide average end-user download rates of between 2Mbps and 4Mbps, making it a viable alternative to fixed broadband networks. The firm expects to settle on a technology and choose a vendor by the end of this year.

Thailand’s largest high speed internet provider True Corp has announced a strategy to increase its broadband user base to 600,000 by the end of this year, up from its current level of 350,000, and double its annual broadband turnover to THB5 billion (USD128 million). True is focusing on five key business areas to attract more clients and boost revenues: wireless broadband access via WiMAX, VoIP telephony, international gateway facilities, internet security and auto-backup connection services for businesses. The company is currently testing a WiMAX network in Nakhon Ratchasima and plans to extend coverage to ten provinces this year, with prices expected to be equivalent to its basic ADSL service charges. n a wide-ranging report published this week, the OECD has outlined some of the factors that could define the success or otherwise of WiMax wireless networking.

The report's primary finding was that WiMax depends critically on spectrum allocation, a process which is still incomplete worldwide. "Despite all the excitement over WiMax, the ultimate role of WiMax in the wireless market is debatable," it said.

Samsung had four WiMAX phones available for visitors to test. I took a quick look to see what a WiMAX call was all about. The connected phones acts as clients and requires a WiMAX server within 1 kilometre distance. I am not sure how you add new devices to your list of phones, but all phones I saw was setup and was a part of the same group. All group members receive your “call” when you press the dedicated send button. It’s like talking with a walkie talkie. Video of and voice from the sender is broadcasted to the other members of a group. The new thing here is the transfer of living picture.

Japan's First WiMAX Network Undergoes Major Expansion

n 2005, Airspan Networks signed agreements with Yozan Inc. to deploy a Tokyo-wide WiMAX network, valued at $16.7 million, to deliver high speed IP connectivity capable of a wide array of data service offerings. The companies has now announced a further $26 million expansion to their contract, bringing its value to more than $42 million. Airspan expects to deliver between $5 million and $8 million of the total in the first quarter of 2006, with the balance by July.
