Netrake and Kineto Wireless Announce Product Interoperability for Support of UMA Wireless LAN Solutions

Netrake and Kineto Wireless announced the companies have successfully completed extensive interoperability testing to support currently installed UMA systems. Netrake's nCite Security Gateway and Kineto's IP-based UMA Network Controller (IP-UNC) are currently deployed in multiple commercial trials for UMA-based mobile/Wi-Fi convergence. This joint solution allows mobile operators to leverage their existing infrastructure and utilize UMA-based technology to cost effectively manage and accelerate fixed-to-mobile usage in home and enterprise environments.

To no great surprise, "free service" means another WiMax trial, but one that may be more advanced than others – including Libera in London, Telabria in Kent, Pipex in Stratford and Brighton's Metranet. The difference, according to Urban WiMax, is that it is promising a smooth change from a free service starting in April to a paid-for service in July, and is based on 802.16d standard kit, not pre-WiMax.

NTT DoCoMo applies for WiMAX test licence

NTT DoCoMo applied to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for a license to set up experimental outdoor wireless stations to test WiMAX. DoCoMo, working in collaboration with other NTT group companies, will conduct the test in the Yoyogi area of Tokyo for about one year using the 2.5GHz frequency band. The test will assess throughput and wireless transmission characteristics according to the distances between a handset and base station, and handset moving speed, verify the optimal wireless parameters and base station allocations to obtain maximum results, assess the possibility of interference from existing satellite communication systems, such as WideStar, and confirm continuous connections during handover within the WiMAX system or between WiMAX and other systems, such as HSDPA.

Samsung had four WiMAX phones available for visitors to test. I took a quick look to see what a WiMAX call was all about. The connected phones acts as clients and requires a WiMAX server within 1 kilometre distance. I am not sure how you add new devices to your list of phones, but all phones I saw was setup and was a part of the same group. All group members receive your “call” when you press the dedicated send button. It’s like talking with a walkie talkie. Video of and voice from the sender is broadcasted to the other members of a group. The new thing here is the transfer of living picture.
