TeliaSonera Uses Kineto Wireless Technology to Enable UMA Service

TeliaSonera, a telecommunications company in the Nordic and Baltic regions, has chosen Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology from Kineto Wireless, Inc. to deliver its new Home Free cellular WiFi service offering. Kineto’s technology is used within the UMA Network Controllers deployed by TeliaSonera. The collaboration enables seamless handover between TeliaSonera’s GSM network and WiFi access points. The Kineto technology is also integrated with the Philips Nexperia platform for use in theSamsung P200, a commercially available UMA handset available for the Home Free service.

MobileIGNITE Announces Release v1.0 of Functional Specification for Fixed Mobile Convergence Handover

Developed by the Handover Interoperability Group of MobileIGNITE, the Functional Specification will allow an FMC Service Provider to specify Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based technology from vendors that allows a user with a dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi mobile phone to be able to connect via both Wi-Fi (fixed) and GSM/UMTS (mobile) access networks. The user will receive the same voice services using a single phone number as the user crosses networks – including the seamless continuity of an in-process voice call.

Orange launches unik: a new generation of telephone

Launching first in France where it will be available from 5th October 2006, unik is a telephone that, as well as offering standard mobile communication, offers unlimited calls to fixed lines and Orange mobiles when you are near a Livebox at home or at work.
The unik phone will be rolled out across other Orange European markets including the Netherlands, UK, Spain and Poland. Each market will tailor its proposition to meet specific customer and market needs.

J:Com to begin trial for fixed-mobile converged telephone service

The test will be conducted in cooperation with Longboard and its agent, Commuture. Along with the trial, J:Com will be considering potential future commercialisation in cooperation with Sumisho Computer Systems, which integrates existing IP systems.

Carriers Form 4G Pressure Group

Seven of the world's biggest wireless carriers have formed an "initiative" called Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) to "provide a coherent view of what the operator community is going to require in the decade beyond 2010." (See Carriers Form NGMN.)

China Mobile Communications Corp. , KPN Mobile , NTT DoCoMo Inc. (NYSE: DCM - message board), Orange SA (London/Paris: OGE - message board), Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S - message board), T-Mobile International AG , and Vodafone Group plc (NYSE: VOD - message board) are the founding members that plan to spell out to wireless technology suppliers what's needed after HSPA (high-speed packet access) and CDMA EVDO, the current 3G technologies being deployed.

Mobile operators team up on next-generation standards

A group of leading mobile operators has teamed up to work on next-generation network standards, putting the focus on making the most out of existing infrastructure. The group includes Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Orange, KPN, NTT DoCoMo and China Mobile, which have incorporated a UK company, the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) initiative, to spearhead the movement. The group plans to work with other standards body on developing mobile technology beyond HSPA and EVDO, focusing on "practicality" and using existing infrastructure and spectrum allocations. Guiding principles for nay new technology should include high levels of data throughput with low latency, low operation and maintenance costs, compatibility with legacy networks, improved terminal certification schemes and support for differentiated services and high levels of authentication and security. The group said it welcomed other mobile operators, hardware and software makers and research institutions joining the initiative.

Motorola behind mobile WiMAX: CommsUpdate : TeleGeography Research

The chief technology officer at US-based equipment manufacturer Motorola says she believes that mobile WiMAX technology will become just as successful as GSM. Padmasree Warrior told Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti that the wireless broadband standard will, however, need the backing of the mobile and semiconductor industries to reach its true potential. She added that W-CDMA 3G operators may run into trouble because their services will be unable to match the high data speeds and low costs which mobile WiMAX is expected to deliver. The first mobile WiMAX services are likely to be launched commercially in 2007/08.

UbiquiSys sees potential for femtocells in UMA and IMS - Computer Business Review

UbiquiSys Ltd, a developer of femtocell technology, sees potential for its home access points in two flavors of fixed-mobile convergence: Unlicensed Mobile Access, UMA, and IP Multimedia Subsystems, IMS.

The Swindon, UK-based company recently announced closure of its $12m Series A funding round, which CEO Chris Gilbert said was sufficient to take through to next year when it plans technical trials of its ZoneGate access point in the first quarter and commercial trials in the second.
